Old Manama from the Eyes of AOU Students

The first activity of the English Club for the 2nd Semester 2018-2019 is a huge artistic, cultural and fun activity in the open air. It was called “Photography Walk”, which is a walk in old Manama, from Bab Al Bahrain till Fereej Al-Fadhel neighborhood. The aim is engaging students with history, geography, and civics through taking photographs of the ancient Souk with its old houses, shops, streets and people, where the students could experience the bustling trading hub past of Bahrain and soak up some authentic street life.

The “Walk” took place on Saturday, 9th of February 2019, where a group of students from the three programs joined Dr. Badr el-Dein, AOU Director, Dr. Ghada and Dr. Seham. They stopped at the major landmarks like Bab al Bahrain, which marks the main entrance to the Manama Souq and carries the essence of old Manama and the Al-Fadhel Mosque with its unique minaret. They also visited some side streets and alleyways which were thrum with sights, sounds, scents, tastes and textures, making “The Photography Walk” a memorable trip. The photos they took reflect the coexistence of the old and new, the exotic and the postmodern as well as the cultural diversity of the capital.

When reflecting on this experience, a student declared that “Walk” builds bridges between the university and their local communities as he now “compares his life in the city to Joyce’s Dubliners.” Another student mentioned that learning does not happen within the classroom only but it takes place through firsthand experience which helps them develop skills and knowledge necessary for their roles as active citizens who should work towards achieving the common good of their communities.
